Rasam is a quintessential South Indian soup, known for its tangy and spicy flavors. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making authentic rasam using Veettu Masala Rasam Powder. This versatile dish can be served with rice or enjoyed as a comforting soup.
Ingredients:
- ¼ cup Toor Dhal
- 1 large tomato (cut into 4 pieces)
- 4 cloves of garlic (optional)
- Gooseberry-sized tamarind (soaked and juiced)
- 2 teaspoons Veettu Masala Rasam Powder
- 2 teaspoons oil (coconut, peanut, or sunflower)
- ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
- 2 dried red chilies
- A pinch of hing (asafoetida)
- Curry leaves
- Salt to taste
- Coriander leaves for garnish
- 2 cups water
- Pinch of turmeric (optional)
Instructions:
- Cook the Dhal
Begin by boiling or pressure cooking ¼ cup of toor dhal with 1 cup of water, the tomato pieces, and 4 cloves of garlic (optional). Once the dhal is fully cooked, remove the skin of the tomato and mash the tomato and dhal mixture until smooth. Set aside.
- Prepare Tamarind Paste
Soak a gooseberry-sized ball of tamarind in warm water for about 20 minutes. After soaking, squeeze the pulp to extract the tamarind juice and set it aside.
- Tempering the Spices
In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat 2 teaspoons of oil. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, dried red chilies, hing (asafoetida), and fresh curry leaves. Stir and roast the spices until the mustard seeds start to splutter.
- Combine the Ingredients
Pour the mashed dhal and tomato mixture into the pan with the roasted spices. Add the tamarind juice, 2 cups of water, and bring it to a boil.
- Add the Rasam Masala
Stir in 2 teaspoons of Veettu Masala Rasam Powder, salt to taste, and a pinch of turmeric (if desired). Let the mixture boil for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
- Garnish and Serve
Once the rasam has simmered for 10 minutes, garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve the rasam hot with rice or enjoy it as a soothing soup.
Pro Tip: Adjust the thickness by adding more or less water based on your preference. Rasam can be light and soupy or thick and hearty!
This rasam, made with Veettu Masala Rasam Powder, is a perfect blend of tangy, spicy, and aromatic flavors, bringing warmth and comfort to every meal. Enjoy!
