How to Make Traditional South Indian Sambar with Veettu Masala Sambar Powder
Sambar is a delicious and hearty South Indian dish that pairs perfectly with rice, idly, or dosa. Here’s a step-by-step recipe to help you prepare an authentic sambar using Veettu Masala Sambar Powder.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Toor Dhal
- 1 big onion, 1 tomato
- 250g mixed vegetables (carrot, drumstick, etc.)
- Gooseberry-sized tamarind (soaked)
- 2 teaspoons Veettu Masala Sambar Powder
- 2 green chilies, curry leaves, mustard, hing
- 2 teaspoons oil (coconut/peanut/sunflower)
- Salt to taste
- Coriander leaves
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dhal
Start by boiling or pressure cooking 1 cup of toor dhal with 2.5 cups of water. Once cooked, mash it well and set it aside.
- Prepare Vegetables and Tamarind
Dice 1 onion, 1 tomato, and 250g of vegetables. Soak a gooseberry-sized tamarind in warm water for 20 minutes, then extract the juice.
- Tempering and Sauteing
In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat 2 teaspoons of oil (use coconut, peanut, or sunflower oil based on your preference). Add mustard seeds, hing, and sliced green chilies. Toss in fresh curry leaves and let them sizzle.
- Cook the Vegetables
Once the mustard seeds crackle, add the chopped onions and tomatoes. Sautรฉ until softened. Then, add the cut vegetables and tamarind paste. Pour in 2 cups of water, and let it all boil together for 5-7 minutes.
- Spice it Up
Now, add 2 teaspoons of Veettu Masala Sambar Powder, a pinch of turmeric (optional), and salt to taste. Let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes, ensuring the vegetables cook evenly.
- Finish the Sambar
Finally, stir in the cooked toor dhal and let the sambar simmer for another 10 minutes. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves for an extra burst of flavor.
